Default matching floors

The hardwood in our family room has been discontinued. We want to rip up the carpet in the adjoining rooms, but can't match the hardwood now. I was thinking about doing a parquet, possibly in a laminate or another hardwood, with the same tone as the hardwood that's already down. Any thots on whether this will look too mix-matched or do you think it will solve my dilemma?

Can't you find the same species of wood and width and stain to match?

Rather than trying to match, how a dramatic shift to cork or even better, bamboo for the family room. I spec a lot of it and have no complaints. Bamboo is a wonderful material (not the cheap stuff at Lowe's though), is a renewable resource, is as hard or harder than most hardwoods and you can get it in just about any color you can imagine. Cork is nice too and is a great sound and heat insulator. It is also a renewable resource so you may qualify for some sort of green credits. Here is a place to start if interested.

Can you use the same type of wood and stain it to match? Or refinish the existing floors and have both rooms stained the same color?

If you can't match it exactly, I'd go for a different look completely. Maybe do travertine tile or slate.

I think it would look funny if it's obvious that the floors are similar, but don't match. But it also depends how the rooms transition into each other.

Did you try calling around and seeing if any stores might still have some in stock?

When most people think of cork, they think of the stoppers in wine bottles. That's fair: more than 60% of the world's cork is used to make corks for vintners. If you've uncorked a few bottles of wine, chances are you've got a few corks tucked away in a... Read More »
