Making New Floorboards Match Old Ones

I am trying to get a couple of new oak floorboards, which are reddish (probably red oak), match the amber color of the 70-year-old surrounding floorboards (white oak) more closely. Has anyone else ever done this? I am thinking of brushing on some Bulls Eye amber shellac to see if that will work. In the past, I haven't had much luck with amber-colored stains.
