making floor heights easy

i have vinyl in my kitchen and i want to put down tile. The problem is the vinyl joins onto my dinning room and thats a wooden floor. The 2 floors are even and separated by a wooden divider which is good.
My question is can i put durock over the vinyl and tile it? but then it will be at least3/4 above the wooden floor and that would make people trip.
I dont think i can take up the subfloor because i would be on the floor joists and i dont think the durock would be strong enough. The floor joists are 16" off center.
Is there something i can put as a divider or whatever its calledto make the 2 floors just blend in so no one trips over?

you will need to remove the vinyl and the 1/4" underlayment that would most likely be used. Then use Ditra and not cement board to keep the heights closer. This small difference will not create a trip hazard.
