Major Hardwood Floor Bummer

My poor husband slid on a painted wood toy, which ground the toy's paint onto our beautiful finished wood floor. How do we get this off?? The floor finish is water based. No idea about the toy's paint. Please help us!

Major Hardwood Floor Bummer

Try a cloth dampened with mineral spirits to start. A scuff remover safe for the floor finish might do it. Buffing it out with paste wax (e.g. bowling alley wax) might work but test it in a corner somewhere first to make sure it does not damage or discolor the finish. Oops, Goo Gone, Krud Kutter or such commercial products---used as sparingly as you can---should work but again test it on an obscure piece of the surface somewhere first. As a last resort a really fine abrasive like steel wool (the grade you can get at woodworking shops) could be tried. Hopefully the water based poly finish will be your friend here and it will come right off. Go slow.
