Luan plywood staples under tile?

My tiling project continues...

I've removed all my vinyl flloor and luan plywood, but still have these staples (look like crown staples, about 3/4" long) every six inches or so in my subfloor. I started pulled them out and it is taking as long as it did to remove the plywood and flooring itself. Any thoughts on whether I'd be okay to just countersink these into the 3/4" T&G subfloor before adding my 1/2" plywood underlayment (followed of course by hardibacker)?

I can see the obvious disadvantage of this plan being the screws for the underlayment hitting the staples, but any thoughts? Anyone done this? It would seem that a pro would either have an ingenious way to get these out or would just pound them in. I can't see someone working as slowly as I did this evening actually making any money on a job.

In case anyone is wondering, the staples were used to apply the luan plywood. When I started pulling on the luan, most of staples pulled right through the top of the wood rather than coming out with it. I can see why this stuff has to come out before putting down tile.

Luan plywood staples under tile?

I am curious to what the flooring guys on this forum say about this too.

As a remodeler, I have had 2 different floor guys tell me the exact opposite thing. My current one says bang them in, and my previous one said pull them all out. (Of course neither one actually had to do the work!)

It's a waste of time to pull them out. Pound them in! Remove only the ones that are bent.

BTW, it takes more time to pound them in then it did to remove the vinyl and luaun too. Don't forget to re-nail or screw the subfloor before going to step #2.
