Linoleum "rug" from the 30's

Hi, We just purchased an old house and pulled up the carpet to find a piece of linoleum that looks like an asian rug still in tact under the carpet. There were newspapers under the linoleum 'rug' from the mid 30's. The backing of the linoleum is charcoal or black in color. It was not a stick on backing, it was just laying there loose. We already ripped it all out of the house and someone mentioned to us that there might have been aspestos in that. What do you think? Would a thorough vacuuming now be addequate to clean the remaining dust out of the house? Thanks so much for your help. Taren

That was most likely tarpaper under the lino. Yes the lino contained asbestos. Vacuuming, may or may not make it worse. Too late now to worry about it.

Would have been nice to see a picture of that-----some of the old patterns were very interesting.

I remember selling those in the '60's & into the 70's. They came in 2 grades. The real cheap ones were $9.95 for a 9x12. The better ones about $ 5 more. These came in 9x12 - 12x12 and 12x15. Sold well in certain neighborhoods. You could get a few years out of them in kitchens. Mostly for basements and enclosed porches.

Not sure if they contained any asbestos. To my knowledge the sheet goods that contained asbestos were the better quality ones which had the off-white backing. The backing was called hydro-cord by Armstrong, others had their own trade name

Even if there was asbestos in the one you removed, I don't think you've got anything to worry about. You didn't sand it, grind it, or eat it. Even then you'd most likely have to be exposed to it for many years. Asbestos is a mineral it doesn't ooze into the air. Relax..............
