leveling hardwood floors for laminate

My house was built in 1905 and it had some disgusting carpet in the living room and dining room. The floors are solid but aren't in good enough shape to refinish so I plan I laying laminate but the floors are very unlevel. Do I need to get under the house and jack up the floor, use leveling compound, or can I lay plywood over the hardwood?

They need to be flat, not level. There is a difference.

The floor is pretty flat maybe an 1/8" difference in a few places.

are you talking about in the middle of the rooms where it looks like a bowl? that can be fixed by jacking up the floor joists...
