Laying Wood

I am in the process of qouting for a house full of carpets, for a old customer, and he has asked my advice regarding real wood/engineerd wood flooring ,that the builders are going to lay, in the kitchen.
There is ceramics on the floor at present and they have said they can lay on top, he has asked if this will be ok.... so any recomendations would be welcome.
