Could anybody give me some tips/advice on laying lino for the first time on a very smooth concrete kitchen floor please?

It's impossible to list here everything you need to know for professional results. A kitchen might be a tough place to learn by trial-and-error because it's usually a fairly big (expensive) piece of flooring. I have replaced more than a few botched jobs that were done by "pros", so maybe first try an entry or other small area for practice.
