laminate over hard wood

Hi, my house is 106 years old and it has hardwood floors that I thought about redoing but someone painted them and im not sure if they're in good enough condition to refinish. So I was thinking about going with laminate. There's already laminate in the kitchen. Im guessing they tore out the old hardwood in the kitchen, so in order for the rest of the floors to be the same height am I going to have to tear out the hardwood? Im not sure what's under the hardwood but am also guessing I have to lay a new sub floor.
