laminate flooring underlayment

I do not like the feeling of spongy feeling when walking on laminate flooring with foam underlayment and can not afford to install a real hardwood. So, ca I get away with just lay tar paper and install laminate over it if i make the floor as flat as possible? I would like to hear from someone who actually done it?
thanks for all the help.

laminate flooring underlayment

it doesnt have to be foam, they make plastic underlayment, they make a black flat foam that isnt spongy. its a lot of work to replace it though. I am buying a laminate with attached underlayment pad

Tar paper is sticky and will cause the floor to pull apart.
As suggested a better grade will have the padding attached. Cork underlaymnet also works.

Consider engineered wood flooring.
