Question

Laminate Flooring and a Cedar Closet

We're replacing the floor in our living room, dining room, kitchen, and hallway with laminate flooring (Harmonics brand at Costco, made by QuickStep, Cabin Maple). The kitchen was vinyl, installed when we moved in 12 years ago; the living room is currently carpet, also installed when we moved in; and the hallway is a pink tile from the 1970's.

The question is what to do with the coat closet, which is 2' by 3', and currently with a cedar floor. One thought is to keep the cedar, as every one likes a cedar closet, even if it's only the floor. Another thought is to replace it, to have a uniform surface; and because it's probably over 30 year old.

If we do decide to keep the cedar floor, should it be sanded?

If the cedar is "aromatic cedar" and of course it is, the way to renew its effectiveness is to sand it from time to time.

Whether or not you cover it is up to you, seems a shame to do so.

then again it's just a closet.
if it's easy for you to refinish then do so.
if not, then cover it up.

good luck!

Then again it's a "cedar closet".

If you feel it is even slightly
beneficial to you then keep it.

My wife purchased some of those small cedar blocks and they smelled great.
I forgot about that...
I can see now the value of an entire floor even that small.

Hey Steven, I'm also in the process of installing the costco laminate flooring. Have you started yet? I am leaving the cedar in all the closets, I even had to buy some more to replace some of the closet flooring.
