Laminate Flooring

We want to change the flooring in our living room to a laminate. It is next to our kitchen separated by walls & an arch-way entrance. My kitchen has a light oak laminate that is about 10yrs. old. Trying to match it is impossible. My question is whether or not it is "acceptable" to pick a different color laminate for the living room, such as one that is darker? I have been told 2 different things. One is that this is totally ok & the other of course is that this would be a huge mistake. I am trying to clarify whether or not this is a good option or should we just stick w/ carpet.

It is acceptable to put a different colored wood in a connecting room. To help it look better you can put a coordinating t-mould in that archway to create a separation between the rooms.

A darker color would probably compliment a lighter color, but you really aren't limited by the flooring in the kitchen. Style your home for you!
