just how perfect does my subfloor have to be for hardwood?

I'm laying 3/4" T & G and I plan on laying 3/4" prefinished hardwood on top.

My house was built in 1905 so... I have a bit of "out of squareness"

I've never done subflooring or hardwood, so I was wondering how big/small of a gap can I leave in between the walls & subfloor?

Not that I will intentionally, but with the lack of squareness and one really interesting wall, I know I'm probably going to be a bit off at some edges.

Is there any sort of wood filler or putty I should look at getting to correct any major flaws of mine?

Thanks in advance

3/4" nailed down hardwood will bridge 16"----In the old days hardwood flooring was nailed to 1x2 sleepers space 16" on centers----this allowed the electrician to run conduit between the subfloor and the hardwood.

If you have some gaps, you will be fine.

I personally wouldn't worry to much about squareness. Most of the time, squareness problems occur at a wall/floor joint. Most people do not walk on the floor next to a wall. make sure that you lay the hardwood across the floor joists as opposed to parallel to the floor joists.
