Joining wood floors in connecting rooms

Hello... I have the same wood flooring in connecting rooms (kitchen and great room) going at opposite diagnoals creating a chevron in the middle. The problem is I can't find a way to transition between the two rooms without using a traditional transition strip that lays on top of the floor, which looks awful. Any ideas?

My first thouht would be to run a piece of flooring perpendicular to the two rooms and butt the floors against it. If the planks are very wide consider ripping them in half. You can glue or nail these strips into place, and it will be the same level as the flooring.
