isolation membrane on plywood

is it necessary to use an isolation membrane over a plywood subfloor in a bathroom porcelain tile installation?

It isn't necessary but it's highly recommended. I never like to install ceramic directly onto any wooden substrate. I've seen too many problems as a result.

Use Ditra, it works as isolation and uncoupling membrane.

Nac Tac makes a good isolater.

I would suggest installing ceramic over wood with Ditra or a CBU.

I agree. Installing tile direct to a wooden subfloor, (has to be double layer), can work, but is not recommended by any pro that knows his/her business. It should never be done where dampness can occur, such as a bathroom. I also recommend either a tile backer or Ditra. Ditra is my first choice, use it if you may get it in the amount you need?
