Intalling Engineered hardwood over partical board

Hey Cmclean,
I am Gregg with The Home Depot in Chicago. I have a few questions about your project. Do you currently have particle board as a subfloor or do plan on putting it down? If you do have particle board as a subfloor do you know why? Particle board isn’t especially strong and is probably not a very good surface to install nice new hardwood on. Let me know more about the project. –Gregg

There need to be some definitio of what You are calling particle board . 1 True particle board looks like fine sawdust on a very smooth sheet .2 OSB oriented strand board is sometimes thought to be particle board , OSB is large flakes of sawdust ,Sometimes 1 inch or two inch and you can feel the roughnes on one or both sides , , Definetly not fine sawdust , Particle board would never be layed as the sub floor ,Unless some one made a huge mistake , It has no structural strength rating and would sag between joist of it were installed as subfloor. So I will assume you mean particle board layed over the sub floor in a litchen or laundry , Where there was vynil ,
The answer is .YES you can lay floating engineered over particle board , But particl board will not hold a nail down product for long

Are you in a mobile home? Particle board was used for years as subfloor in mobile homes.
