installing underlayment for laminate flooring

Will use of the thicker underlay that is sold for laminate flooring, looks like felt pading, work to even out some high spots on a wood tounge and grove floor. I dont want to refinish it but like the look of some off the laminate floorings. They say this kind of underlay, i live in a apartment will help keep the neighbors noise down. How much of a unevenness will this kind of underlayment compinsate for the unevenness

Dont count on an underlayment to even out high/low spots in the subfloor. Your subfloor must be flat, or your laminate flooring will not fit together properly. Roll a 6 ft iron pipe on your subfloor to detect the high/low spots. Correct these first, then put down your underlayment
