Installing new hardwood ontop of existing hardwood
 

Is there any reason why i can not install new hardwood flooring on top of my existing hardwood flooring?

1. the floor is probably the original (1920's) and is top nailed
2. the addition that they build in the 60/70s they installed a different hardwood flooring, in a different direction and not at the same level (about an 3/4 to 1 inch bump up). so i figured this is my chance to remove that floor and make the entire floor all the same hardwood, in the same direction and at the same level. (i have a row home with a fairly open layout)

so here are some questions i have about installing the new floor

1. would the nailer go through the existing hardwood?

2. the new floor would be perpendicular to the joists and the existing hardwood floor i am installing over. In my orginal post i thought i had an issue but after looking at it i dont. the new floor planks however would be runing the long ways of my house which i guess is not a big deal so long as the transistion between the two floors is level.

any other tips or suggestions on the install? has anyone ever done this before?

I nailed bamboo over my existing floors, and it worked great. I put the bamboo down at a 45 degree angle to the existing, because it was somewhat uneven (in both directions). I'm getting ready to do the same thing again.
