Question

Installing Laminate over uneven pine plank floor?

Hi Everyone,

The upstairs flooring of our log home is a 1 1/2" pine tongue and groove (5" wide boards), the underside of which acts as the ceiling for the first floor. I would like to install some kind of laminate atop the second floor since the floor boards are worn and splintering in some spots and also to add a little bit of soundproofing between the first and second floors. The problem as I see it as that the upstairs floor isn't perfectly flat or even since some of the boards sit slightly higher or lower than the others.

Any suggestions on how best to go about installing a laminate overtop the existing floor? I imagine carpeting would be easier but I'd rather stick with a hard woodlike surface. Any advice or tips greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Tom

More work and cost for me. Also, these are the kid's bedrooms that I'm talking about here.

So do I have to sand the existing plank floor to level out the uneven boards or would a new plywood subfloor atop the pine planks do enough to ready the floor for the laminate?

I am not a floor expect, but just did my basement with laminate. Laminate is extremely easy to install. The only concern is like your said, the floor should be quite level, no obvious up and down spot... whether the substrate is plywood, or finished wood, that does not matter, you need to lay a underlayment on either one. so in your case, you probably want to leave your existing flooring the way it is(why create work)... for part which is not level (has up or down) you need to patch them... the laminate manual said use portland cement on plywood board... but for finished wood, probably same can be done...

Either sand them or go with 1/2 plywood but for a flat floor sanding is the better option cheaper but messier.

As an after thought once you smooth them up with the sander you may just want to refinish them.

Zero Punch makes a good point. You are better-off sanding, then you could just refinish if you like it.

Laminate floor is very, very slippery when you only have on socks. so if its your kids room laminate might noty be best, thy could fall and break something
