Installing ceramic tiles on stairs.

Hi everyone

I would like to install ceramic tiles on my stairs going down to the basement.

Presently, there are some cheap vinyl peel and stick tiles. I plan on removing them and cleaning it up. The stairs are made of wood.

Can I install the tiles right on the wood? If so, do I use the regular thinset for ceramic tiles?

Thanks very much.

Stairs move to much for a safe installation---

I've done it ,long ago, without a failure----however I would never do that again---Just dumb luck that it worked.---Mike----

Yummy Yummy Yummy!

Now you have entered into the Twilight Zone.

First describe how these steps are constructed in every detail.

What are they made of dimensionally?
Do they have closed risers?
What size are the stringers?
Is there a center stringer?
What size are the treads?
Are the treads set on notches or are they cleated?
Nailed or screwed?

Steps are not usually a good thing to put tile on.

Hi Bud!

So nice to hear from you, and you too mike.

Not a good idea? Then I guess I will live with the vinyl, and maybe replace with better vinyl....... We use these stairs to enter the house in the winter, so I thought if I put something like ceramic it would be really easy clean up.

The risers are closed. What the hell is a stringer? OMG I sound stupid...
Notched, cleated????? All I know is that they are wood approx. 2 inches thick. There is no railing on either side. They are just steps against 2 walls, if that makes any sense..... Only 6 steps.....

Well...I wish you would look around and find something else to put tile on.

Wooden steps are super problematic and often have many issues. It can be done but only under the best of circumstances.

How about the fridge? No, nevermind that isn't a good idea either.

Ok, if the best tile expert tells me no, then no, I won't do it.

I will remove the old peel and stick and put some better quality vinyl.

Thanks Bud. You just saved me a lot of headaches.

Your are the best!!!!!
Love ya.
