Inspecting hardwood before installing ?

I am looking for some advice on what imperfections or common problems to look for in the hardwood before installing it ?
3/4 x 2 1/4 oak.

Thanks in advance

Whatever you do, do not try buying second (#2) stock from a "liquidation type wharehouse", or othe avenue.
That is when you run into a lot of problems including varying widths and extreme color differences.

Generally, the no. 1 stock is all very good.
