If I wanted to...
I just bought my first house and the first thing I started working on was the floor in the foyer and kitchen. My plan is to remove the old ceramic tile and all the underlay to get a clean start at the sub-floor.
In the foyer there was 2 layers of ceramic tile on top of 1 1/2" of motor or concrete before I reached the sub-floor. Now I would like to make the new tile flush with the hardwood flooring in the living room. The hardwood floor is 1 5/8" higher then the sub-floor. My question is, if I wanted to "build up" the sub-floor so the new tile would be flush with the existing hardwood floor, where should I start? Just add some layers of plywood? First picture shows the layers of tile and motor I went through, and the second is the difference between the sub-floor and the hardwood floor. |

Try 3/4" plywood, then 1/2" tile backer board, then tile @ 3/8". See if that gets you where you want to be.
