I guess they were going for a "Tetris" look with the wood flooring

I pulled up the cheap berber carpet so I could get to the original wood flooring in my li'l old house. The plan was to sand it down and refinish. I figured there would be some spots that were worn or had stains, but I wasn't expecting this.

(Click on the photo to enlarge it)

What the heck did they do? Or maybe I should ask why?? My guess is they replaced some bad pieces any way they could and figured to just cover it in carpet.

There are several problems here. One is this floor is from the 1960's, so I hope I can still buy boards the same size and style. Two is I need to replace more than it seems. If you look at the reddish vertical board that's in the middle of the pic (it ends at the foot long piece horizontal piece) you can see they shaved off about 3/8 of an inch all the way down the board. So all the vertical boards from that one to the left do not line up. (In other words, look at the vertical boards that are split by that one long horizontal board and you'll see they don't line up with each other).

Three, you can't tell by the pic, but the carpet actually runs underneath the wall and into the next room. They laid down the carpet and rebuilt the wall on top of it.

I can redo the wall, but I would love suggestions on how to deal with the wood floor.

That looks like a bad patch job or maybe a remodeling gone awry.

Maybe this was one big room with a built-in counter or something, and someone decided that they wanted two smaller rooms, tore out the built-in, carpeted and built a divider wall on top.

You do know that in the mobile home business of long ago they would build the floor, carpet or vinyl cover the whole thing in the same carpet / vinyl, then build walls on top.

Maybe you can find enough flooring to cover the entire room, and either tear out all this, or overlay it.

Maybe they buried a large container full of money under the floor. There's only one way to find out.
