How to tell is floors have oil based finish

I am refinishing the hardwood floor in the dining room. This floor also connects to the hardwood in the living room and kitchen, which are already finished floors. The person helping me at the paint store said to use oil based poly for the finish if the adjacent floors have an oil based finished. That way they will all yellow in color as opposed to putting on a latex based finish that won't change color. How do I tell if the floors that are finished have an oil based or latex based finish on them? The house is old but it looks like the floors have recently been refinished.

Thx for any help.

Clean rag, denatured alchol and an inconspicuous spot. If the alcohol removes or mars the finish, it's waterbased. If it just makes a clean spot, it's oil.
