How to stain cement back to normal color?

I bought a house recently. Underneath one of the rooms (it was an old porch) is a cement slab. That cement slab is a terrible red color. Question:

Can i stain it back? Id like to get back to a grey. what are my options. Do i have any?

Any help would be awesome.

Is it painted or coated?

If not, it probably is colored/pigmented concrete that can never be returned to a "gray" color. If a red iron oxide was used when the concrete was made, that is about as permanent as you can get, but "dyes" are not quit so permanent.

thanks for the reply. If it is pigmented, can i lay a small layer of self leveling concrete to cover it up and give me the grey color back?

A thin layer of slc will probably crack. Why not paint it gray with porch paint?

Boy, regardless of paint or stain or dye, I don't know a method/product that would leave you with that high finish marble look.

Sandblasting or chemical are going to leave you with a rougher (small pitted) finish. Even the slc's are not going to finish out super smoth.

If aappearence is that important, how about tileing it and make it look real fancy.

If it's just the color change, use a paint... or I also love the product (Restore) over concrete.... I don't like it over wood decks. But that product gives a non-smoth colored appearence.

Good luck

Peter
