Brick chisel, wide SDS bit in a electric hammer drill, right angle grinder with a diamond blade.

I removed it from a small area (30 sqf) with a hammer and chisel and some physical effort in about two hours.

Someone will correct me if I am wrong, but thinset that doesn't come up when you chisel it can stay down if you're re-tiling.
