How to remove paint from concrete floor?

I am tiling basement floor and was told not to tile over painted concrete. The paint is that grey floor paint seen on many basement floors(not sure what type) so how do I remove paint or is it better to use some sort of underlay? Please help!

I did not post duplicate posts on purpose. The first time I tried to send it there was an error, so I figured it did not work. So I tried it again, after I sent the second one with no issues I realized the first one was there.

NEVER use any type of chemical solvent to remove paint from concrete that you intend to apply ceramic tile over.

The paint as well as the solvent are both bond-breakers when it comes to ceramic tile adhesives.:)

The paint should be mechanically removed.:)

I just removed some 6x6 tiles from a back porch that had been painted and then tiled
we estimate the tile had been installed 15 years ago on a painted surface
it took considerable elbow grease to break the bond between the thinset and the paint
I believe you can install tile over painted concrete.Oh yeah the concrete was a 2''
topping over a floor made of railroad ties that had been placed side by side to span 7'
is it against the rules to open up an old post ?

Never! (unless you're a spammer....) However, it's in your best interest (if you wish a speedy reply) to start your own thread in the appropriate sub-forum. :)
