How to Remove Black Tacky (wet) Adhesive from Hardwood

Hi,

I am going to refinish the hardwood floors in the house I recently purchased. In one bedroom they installed a wood look linoleum floor over the beautiful dark hardwood floor.

The tiles peel right up with just your hands, but there is a black wet/tacky adhesive on top of the hardwood floor that I have to safely, and hopefully easily, remove from the hardwood. HOW DO I GET THIS ADHESIVE OFF EASILY WITHOUT DAMAGING THE HARDWOOD FLOOR? PLEASE HELP.

Thank you, in advance!

You realize that the tiles and adhesive ptobably both contain asbestos? Only way that I know to remove it is scrape it. Any chemical might do permanent damage to the wood.
