How to put in vertical parts on the stairs

My basement stairs only have the horizontal steps... it does not have the vertical plates.... I don't know how to name them... somthing like tread...etc... anyhow... here is what I think I am going to do to complete it, please let me know if there is wrong doing:

1. purchase those nice looking pine wood may be a inch thick woods from HD

2. cut them fit in the rectangular holes.. may be a bit bigger so that they can fit tight.

3. put glue on them before fitting

4. nail them besides gluing... my question here is whether I should use finish nails or nails with flat head? and do I need to nail from the top and bottom or just the top is enough, as I don't have a nail gun, nailing from bottom is quite hard especially the steps at the lower part of the stairs... or do I need nail at all, if the liquid nail is good enough...

thanks

riser boards.

How far do the treads protrude from the stringers?

you probably asking is there enough room to put the riser on top of the tread at the end... I need to check this out...

Did some measurements

the space allowed to put the risers on top of the tread is 3/4 inch. it is not a lot. I suppose I need to buy wood with such thickness for the riser, i.e. 3/4 inch. the tread's thickness is 1.5 inches. so do I need to nail the riser onto the tread? or liquid nails is good enough...
