How to Prep wood floor for ceramic tile ?
Looking for a little help. Completely redoing the bathroom.
Tub and walls done. Now it is time for the floor. I have bought the ceramic tile and Fiber rock borad to but on the floor for the tile. It has 1"x3"floors in it.well it has two 1"x3" floors in it. Very old house. The floors are sturdy and in good shape, but ut had carpet on it with feltpaper. So there area few cracks and some of the fletpaper not coming up.this is a 6'x7' area. Do I need to put wood filler do to fill cracks and leveling things out before putting down the fiber rock?? ![]() Trying to do it right the first time. This will be my first ceramic tile job. I too have an old house and when we we did the barhroom floor we removed all the old floors, wood, tile, and vinyl. We took it down to the sub-floor then put durarock down and tiled over this. Doing it this way made the bathtoom floor level with the bedroom floor. Good

I'd scrape up as much as you can of the felt paper. Use a floor patching compound like Mapei PlaniPatch to smooth the cracks. Then spread thinset and lay your backer board into it before screwing it down. Now if the slats are very out of level you may want to consider a self leveling compound. Laticrete 86 can be poured on wood and only requires a minimum 1/8" thickness.

You should NEVER apply tile backerboard to slat flooring.

Somehow I missed that it was 2 layers of slats. Bud is right of course. There is too much possibility for movement in a double slat floor. You really need a plywood subfloor in place first. Of course then you are looking at boosting your floor even further unless you can see your way to pulling up the top layer of slats.

.....and when you "take back the fiberjunk" buy yourself a step ladder so you can get into the room when it is finished.
![]() Or.......remove the top layer of slats. You are asking for trouble trying to cover up TWO LAYERS of slats and then expecting a tile installation to survive the next few seasons.

How to Prep wood floor for ceramic tile ?
I have never did tile before. I have a few basic questions.
1) After i snap my line I'll end up with a 10" cut on both sides of my room but if I move the tile all the way flush against one wall it will be centered on the door and I'll have a 4" cut on the opposing wall is that the proper way to do it or what? 2) At what point do you put down something for cracks in the slab, I mean what size cracks are not acceptable before you have to repair them? 3) Also if there is some flat paint over spray on the floor does it need to be ground down or just mopped? 4) By the back sliders the concrete slab is about 1" above the slider door track any suggestions? 5) how do you transition from tile to carpet? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You |

FISHZONE,
I see you have posted this identical post in two places. There is no reason to do that, it only serves to confuse respondents. ![]() Lat's abandon this post and work with your other one since it isn't hijacking an ongoing thread.
