How much thinset to set durarock

I am getting around to setting the durarock prior to ceramic installation on my bath. It has been torn out since 2004. I have 7.5 sheets of durarock and am wondering how much thinset I need to set them. I was told that the cheap thinset for this purpose is just fine????????? Any other hints would be greatly appreciated. What size trowel?? I am working over plywood where I pulled up old commercial style vinyl flooring and the black sticky stuff is still there. I was told that adheasion is not the issue with laying the durarock since it is screwed to the subfloor, it is a matter of getting a flat surface to lay to. Is this right?

Thanks

Any "unmodified" thinset is fine for installing the cement board. Unmodified is the lowest cost thinset.

Use a square notched trowel 1/4" X 1/4" X 1/4". Then use fasteners in the schedule recommended by the cement board maker.

Hi Bud, I should have known that you would be the first to respond So I am guessing that you see no problem with that stupid sticky black stuff? How many bags of thinset should I buy? 7.5 sheets

Nope, no problem.

You should bring home two bags. You are at 112 square feet and typically that would take two bags.

Don't forget you will need "seam tape" when the time comes to install the tile.
