Question

How much carpet do I need?

I have an "L" shaped room with the following dimensions
20'6" (20.5) (length) X 12'2" (12.17) (width) and the smaller part of the room measures

13' (length) X 10'8" (10.67) (width)

I calculate that I need 426 sq ft. or 48 sq yd. Does this sound correct?

48 sq yd should give you plenty, without much waste. As long as there's no pattern.

That one width is actually 12' 1", how long are typical rolls? Are they EXACTLY 12' or are they a hair longer?

Can be as wide as 12' 3" and as narrow as 11' 9". Usually around 11' 11", No way to know for sure. 48 yards should give you enough fill if it's not wide enough.

You can request what minimum width you'll accept to cover that 12' 1". Ask the installer how much it'll stretch. As mentioned a 12' wide carpet can be as short as 11'9" and be "legal".

If it'll work you need less that you figured. 12x20.5' + 12x13' =12x33.5. Add a little for out of square and you need a 12x34' which is 45.33 sq. yds.

Sorry Jaz, but I don't know any retailer who would sell to you under those circumstances. If they have it in stock, they can just go measure it. If they have to order it in, they have no control over width and that is a small sale. No way they want to take a chance on getting stuck with special-order carpet. I have had my own store, you just don't tell a mill or distrbutor that you won't accept anything less than 12' wide. They would laugh at you.
