How to level old shower bed?

I want to tile over the slab area where a previous shower had been.
It's about 2'x3' and dips about 2" below level at center (drain). The slab is continuous (no separate shower pan).
I was thinking mortar to level the depression, but I'm afraid the mortar won't bond where it feathers to 0 at the edges. I read that 2" is too thick for self-leveling compound.
Any advice? Thanks!

Deck mud ,set in a bed of wet thinset will fill the deeper parts---self leveling compound or Ardex Feather Finish for the thin spots----

You are going to plug that drain off first, right?

2" is too thick for SLC in a single coat, but you can do multiple coats if you prime in between. It's rather easy to work with IMHO.

Thanks!
I'll plan on scraping off the existing paint, use some deck mud on thinset and finish the last 1/4 inch with leveling compound.
After I plug the drain
