How to get stains out of slate tile???

About 6 years ago I redid my bathroom on the main floor. We decided to install 12" black slate tiles. After the install I sealed the tiles with the recommended low gloss sealer. Fast forward, on the tiles around the shower which get commonly wet, I have dark spots that have developed. Somehow water has penetrated the sealer. Some spots are as big as 1sq".

Does anyone have a suggestion on how I can remove the stains, or the proper way to remove the existing sealer, clean the tile, and re-apply a new higher gloss sealer in an attempt to mask the water spots?

I will post some pictures later.

Thanks

To late now but slate is one of the last stones I would have choosen for that area.
It's soft and very poris.
It also should have been resealed once a year to keep the water out of it.

How to get stains out of slate tile???

Joe,

I regret it everyday. If I didn't plan on selling it, I'd replace it with ceramic or porcelain. Thanks for the link.

We keep telling people not to use natural stone in showers, but sometimes people who do not understand the function of sealer won't listen. Sealer is not gonna keep moisture from going into the stone.

I doubt your stain has anything to do with the type of stain mentioned in that eHow article. Unlike the surface stain they speak about, your's is likely water saturation. Poultice powder is probably not the way to go in your case. It should come out if you don't use it a while. Could take weeks to dry out. What type of substrate is the slate bonded to and with what?

I fully agree with you.

For clarification, it's not in the shower. It's on the floors. I suspect it has something to do with water aswel,l but when we took a family vacation this summer for two weeks, it didn't change in appearance.

It's bonded to thinset over a plywood sub-floor.

It's not a swimming pool and there is no tile in the shower. The most water it receives are sprinkles coming from wifes hair as she's toweling it. Mold is not a concern at all.
