How do I place marble flooring when I have self stick tiles right now?
Ok, my dilemma is that I have a very small bath room (64 in by 37 in) and someone gave me some beautiful marble tiles. I was wanting to use these tiles in this bathroom since it is a half bath and it is so small. Right now it just has the sticky self adhesive tiles which are coming apart and look horrible. How would i go about laying the marble flooring or can it even be done?
First remove the vinyl along with any thin layers of plywood or similar panels. Once you get to the subfloor, re-screw it well and install another sheet of plywood, 3/8" min. thicker is of course better. Then install a tile backer board into fresh thinset and fasten per all directions. Finally install your tiles using thinset mortar.
Your subfloor system should be very stiff for marble and it's likely your standard joists system isn't. If you let us know the type and size of the joists. the spacing and the unsupported span, we can give you more info on what to do.
