How to add carpet treads to hardwood stairs

I'm looking for an inexpensive way to add carpet treads to my stairs so me and my old dog can go up and down my stairs safer...we keep slipping on the hardwood. I don't want a long runner, just carpet on the treads. Browsing on line I found that everything is super expensive, like $10.00 or more for each tread x 15 treads =$150.00, which is too expensive. Does anyone have ideas for a more affordable solution? Also, will the adhesive backing ruin my beautiful stairs?

There are only two ways to attach carpet to stairs and both ways will damage the treads. Staples and glue will mess your treads up, if you are worried about slipping why not get some none skid (sand like) to go in a clear finish to go on the treads, it won't be visible and you won't be slipping and it isn't that expensive.

What about peel and stick, or double sided tape? Will those ruin my treads? They are getting scratched up from my dogs nails so carpet will not only make it safer, but it will also stopp the damage. No?

We've tried the friction tape, it leaves a residue. Most adhesives can actually chemically bond with a lot of finishes.

You could try a wire scraped wood floor for the treads, but that wouldn't be cheap to install.

I'd say a carpet runner and take the plunge to put down tack strips.
