Question

HELP! Insulation under carpet squares???

I recently ripped up the old carpet in my bedroom. The floors were in worse condition then expected. The gaps between each floor board are fairly large. Some so large that i can see down into the basement. Needless to say, there is a wonderful New England Winter breeze coming up through the floor.
I am using carpet squares for the new carpeting. For now i only have them layed on the floor, they are not adhered. Before i used the adhesive to put them down, i was wondering if there is any sort of insulation i can lay, attach to the floor, then attach the carpeting on top of that. If no such thing, is there some sort of crack filler i can use on the floor to fill those?
Someone please help!!! Its cold!!!

HELP! Insulation under carpet squares???

I would put the expandable foam insulation in the cracks and then plywood over the top.

I would be afraid that nasty foam stuff would drip right through and make a helluva mess downstairs.

My suggestion would be to install a plywood underlayment first then use batt insulation downstairs between the floor joists.

There is nothing in the line of insulation you can use on the topside under the carpet squares that would work well and be cost effective.
