Thanks in advance for your help. I want to thin set ceramic my small bathroom in a 42 year old house.
The floor joists are on 16 inch centres. There is two layers of vinyl flooring already which I will rip out. The bathroom floor which (odly) meets the kitchen floor is now even. I do not plan to ceramic the kitchen at this time so I will have uneven door threshold issues. On top of the plywood floor they have nailed very thin sheets of plywood on top of the plywood floor underneath the vinly flooring and skim coated cement in some spots.
My questions are:
How can i tell if the floor will hold the load?
Can i just put backer board on top of the vinyl flooring (2 layers of vinly) or should I rip out just the vinly or the vinyl and the very thin sheets of plywood nailed to the top of the plywood floor so I am just left with the plywood floor?
I ripped out the door and frame and am down to the vertical studs in the door frame. Should I at least put in a new door frame before I board and tile.
I know the bathroom floor will be higher than the kitchen. Any threshhold advice. I do plan to tile the ajoining kitchen $omeday.
I have attached a pic.
