Help - am I going to be sick - I just was handling asbestos flooring!

I was at my mother in law's old abandoned house, cleaning it out. We are getting ready to have it torn down or burned by the fire dept. It was built in 1937. It had wood floors, but in every room (6 rooms), linoleum "rugs" were laid over the wood. Each room had a different design. Most of them were damaged and breaking off in pieces. I did alot of sweeping and piling the pieces into a pile. I know I was breathing in alot of dust (I had no mask on) and handling the stuff. I didn't realize until I got home and talked to someone at the fire dept. that the linoleum probably has asbestos in it. Should I worry? What can I do? Also, the fire dept. won't burn the house down with the asbestos in it. We don't know how we're going to deal with it. But am I going to get cancer???

"Mesothelioma has a typical latency period of 20 to 50 years, but certain factors can shorten or lengthen the time to diagnosis."

If you are 65 YO in the U.S. it's 50-50 you'll die within 20 years, anyway. If you are less than 65 there may be screening tests for this that look at your lung tissue at the molecular or cellular level but their predictive value is probably pretty low this early in the game.

Actuaries who work for health insurance companies would know this best. Some greenbacks may loosen their tongues, if you get my drift.

From the UK Bureau of Health Protection Agency

Asbestos

Q

Could a single exposure to asbestos be harmful?

A

The risks of serious long term health effects from a single exposure are judged to be very low.

How is anybody here going to know for sure? Usless you are a medical specialist there is no way anybody here can answer that question. Go to your doctor, thats what they are for.

You are going to die. I'm going to die. My dog died a month ago. Everyone dies. That's life!
However, I heard it takes one speck of asbestos to create cancer. Or not. You never know until it happens.
