health concern of asphalt felt paper for hardwood underlayment

We are going to install hardwood floor very soon. And I searched the installation guide and seems like many people suggest asphelt felt as an underlayment. But i found on the rool there is warning that this material can cause cancer and birth defect. Since we are planning to have baby, I'm really concerned. Is it a valid concern? What other material is safer?

Thanks.

I install alot of hardwood flooring and I use red rosin paper. You can find it in the hardwood floor section of Lowe's.

health concern of asphalt felt paper for hardwood underlayment

rrbb,

The issue, as with alot of chemically treated or fiber-based products, revolves around the material being 'disturbed' and sending particles into the air, which are then inhaled into the lungs...& body...which can cause cancer.

(Side Point: These materials are disturbed, when they are cut into .... for installation purposes. They are also disturbed during any removal process. Much like asbestos pipe insulation. It's fine when left alone but must be removed by a properly licensed company)

Do like Big Dave suggested...rosin paper, that is the common material used today for Wood flooring installations.
