Hardwood to Vinyl step

I have just finished installing a hardwood floor in a sunken family room (1 step down). The adjoining floor is vinyl with a 6 foot opening. My wife has suggested that we install a 6 or 8 inch wide hardwood plank with bullnose, flush with the vinyl making it look like a stair step. I'm thinking that maybe a 2 or 3 inch would be more appropriate due to the two different flooring materials. We are planning on changing the vinyl to tile at some point in the future.

Any comments on what would look best?

Hardwood to Vinyl step

The bullnose should be hanging over 1/2" to 1". 2-3" wide just won't be as stable. Use, one that's wider. It will look good with the tile too.(don't do the step with tile when you do tile. It will tend to chip and break) It will stand out a little, but its a step you don't want it to perfectly blend for safety's sake.

Edit to my post: the tile will raise the level of floor. Go with one of those metal floor trim pieces to finish off the vinyl.
Swith to wood to make up the height when you add backer board and tile.
