Hardwood stairway

I was lucky to recently be able to buy my family home. Last night i tore the carpeting off the steps that had been there before i was born. (I am 47 years old) Underneath was beautiful hardwood. I plan on refinishing them though some of the risers have seperated and they creak. Any suggestions. Dont wanna get into too much of a financial deficit. If i use wood filler in the cracks will it last?

Are you going to paint or stain the risers? If you're going to paint them wood filler should be just fine. If you're going to stain them, do yourself a favor and replace the risers. It really isn't too bad a job. This filler just won't stain the same as the wood and you will always notice it.
