Hardwood refinish questions, removing part of old coat only before re-coating?

Hello.

I'm looking to refinish my hardwood floor next week. And here's the basic situation I'm in.

1. Some rooms will require a sand + recoat. Some parts of the floor has turned dark due to high traffic and wear and tear, and other parts have large scratches.

2. Some room's floor condition is decent, while the top coat is much thinner, the wood underneath is not scratched or damaged.

Regardless, all the floors needs to have gaps and nail holes filled with wood-fillers.

My question is, for the second type of floor, can I get away with filling the gap, do a light sanding with a fine grit sand paper (to remove any excess fillers), and then just re-coat?

Basically, lets say the old coat is only partially removed with a fine sandpaper, would it cause any issues when new coat is applied? or is it all or nothing kind of deal. ie. Either remove all the old top coat, or keep the old top coat.

Thank you for your time.

In my opinion it would be best to sand the the entire finish off of all the floors. The dark spots are more than likely from animals. These spots will not sand out. Once fininsh is sanded off you can use a trowel on filler to fill all gaps.

Thank you very much for the advice.

After testing out in a closet, I think sanding the floor until all old finish is gone is indeed the best way to go.
