Hardwood over 1X's

Can 3/4" hardwood flooring be installed over diagonal 1 X 6's? The house is 1940's and the diagonals are in good solid shape. The few squeeks would be taken care of with ringshank nails or screws.

I am trying to minimize height differences from hardwood to tile and carpeted floors.

Also if hardwood can be installed over the 1 X's what type of vapor barrier should be put over the diagonals?

TIA

Michael

Hardwood over 1X's

No problem. Before plywood became a readily accepted and available sub flooring , floors were always decked with diagonal one by's, and often had hardwood flooring installed over them. Be sure to lay down a layer of felt paper between the sub floor and the hardwood.

Do it all the time.

One tip though. Before you install, screw off the 1x6s to eliminate (or reduce) the chance of squeeks that are prone to that decking style. Hopefully eliminate
