Hardwood to hardwood transition

I'm about to embark on a total second floor makeover. Replacing all the carpet with hardwood.

My plan is to use all 3/4" hardwood so the transitions from main room to bedrooms can be continuous. However, I don't plan on using the same color/species of wood in every room.

I've thought of three ways to transition from floor to floor:

1. Slide one wood in to the other
2. Use a transition between the woods
3. Use a totally different shade of wood between the two woods

My original thought was to use the same thickness throughout so I could just continue installing the next wood into the previous wood at each doorway. Is this a good practice? What would a professional do?

If all the wood is the same thickness you would use a spline where the to connect.

Hardwood to hardwood transition

Asthetics is a matter of taste. Were it me, I would choose number three with a transition piece of a different type of wood at the entrance to each door. Since you won't be using a great deal of the transition wood it could be something exotic or expensive.

This is what I was thinking. We can get samples for $5, no matter that type it is. So why not get something really cool looking for $7.50/sq ft, for example, and use it as the transition?
