Hardwood floors installed over 1/2" and 5/8" subfloor

We are looking to install some new 5/16" Brazilian Walnut hardwood in our house. I started ripping up a small portion of the existing 5/16 hardwood to see what was underneath. I discovered the whole floor which includes hardwood and tile was installed over top of a subfloor made from a layer of 1/2" plywood over joists on 16" centers. On top of that 1/2" plywood there is a 5/8" board that looks like mdf or some sort of particle board. The tile and hardwood was attached to that.

I'm planning to just rip up 5/8" board with the floor since they glued the hardwood down and its a bear to get up and smooth. What should I put down in its place? Would another 5/8" board give proper support?

Install new 5/8" plywood underlayment. Get a decent grade like B/C exposure 1, which means the glue is exterior grade. Leave an 1/8" between between sheets and at least 1/4" at the perimeter and all vertical objects.
