Getting ready to install hardwood floors in my living room, it has plywood floors that are unlevel in spots , how important is it to have the floors level??
I justinstalled 3/4"x5" hardwood in my living room and dining room.
I did sand some of the joints in the subfloor that weren't even and cleaned the blobs of drywall compound off. I supposed you could fill in the low spots with floor leveler if you wanted. 3/4 inch hardwood will span most of the dips in the floor anyway. make sure to run the hardwood perpendicular to the floor joists. how unlevel is your floor?
Think this is the key question here. Would something like a cork underlay even things out enough? It would also give you a bit of sound and thermal insulation. Or are we talking major sags or high spots in the subfloor?
The wood manufacturer provides in every box installation instructions typically the subfloor must be flat, not level, within 3/16" in 10'. Take a string and check if it has dips more than 3/16" they must be leveled within the 3/16" OR the manufacturer will not be liable for what happens if you do not. Same for bumps higher than 3/16". Always follow mfg's guidelines and you will suceed.
