hardwood flooring

Good evening,
i recently removed wall to wall carpeting to expose hardwood. the floors are in relatively good shape, however there seems to be a greasy residue. any ideas of what it may be and how to remove it?

greasy residue?

This is not a very good description.
It can be so many things.

If you could attach the photos or describe the color and what exactly you mean by greasy residu.

It can be some kind of glue or maybe the finish, or paint, or just a stain that can be animal pee, or just plain food, dirt so many things.

If you can not clean it off with hardwood floor cleaner then you have to refinish the floors.

If you can see the stains ( discoloration and the floor is not even as far as the color) then refinishing might not fix the deep stains, you might think of refinishing and dark staining the floors.
