hardwood floor transition

The previous owner of my house expanded the living room by taking down the wall between the living room and a small third bedroom. After taking up the ugliest carpet ever, I found hardwood floors with a 4" gap filled with plywood and floor leveler where the wall was. I was told that patching the two floors together isn't possible because the boards don't line up -offset by 1/4". Can't afford to tear it all up & do it right. Any ideas?

I am afraid you will have to tear it up. It is extremely difficult if not impossible for a do it yourselfer to try and match flooring boards to line up perfectly as if there were no gap to begin with.

Now a good hardwood flooring expert might be able to do it. Now if he is able to do it, you will need to probally have the floor sanded down to bare wood and restain it. I doubt that just restaining the repair portion will match the rest of the hardwood. The cost of sanding and restaining just might get you to re-consider.

I am not sure that I understand your dilemma completely. But, it sounds like this might be something to pay a professional hardwood flooring person to fix.

You could replace that ugly carpet with beautiful carpet and save some money and headaches?

that actually sounds like a good idea...

Hey Flor...maybe you could do the carpet job for Gybonz. Is New Hampshire far from Alaska?

Just kidding:jester:
